YA Romance • Drama • Grief & Healing
Summary
The second installment in Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy takes a more serious turn, diving into themes of grief, heartbreak, and emotional growth. While the first book sparkled with summer nostalgia and light romance, It’s Not Summer Without You tackles heavier themes with more introspection.
This summer, like all the ones before, Belly returns to the beach house, but it’s under vastly different circumstances. Everything has changed, and a beloved member among the two family dynamics is missing. Our protagonist is left to navigate the emotional wreckage of two great losses. Her relationship with Conrad is strained, and her connection with Jeremiah has begun to shift. The story unfolds like a stormy tide, pulling readers through waves of sorrow, longing, and unexpected tenderness.
This book is a roller coaster. Belly’s grief is palpable, and her emotional confusion feels deeply authentic. Jenny Han doesn’t shy away from the messy parts of mourning. We see how it affects Belly’s relationships, actions, and self-worth. There’s more grief and emotional turbulence than summer romance than experienced in book one, but it’s layered with vulnerability and uncertainty that connects you deeper to her character.
Book Series Turned TV Phenomenon
If you read my book review for The Summer I Turned Pretty, then you will have already read my confession…
I liked the show more than I liked the book, but in this case… It’s Not Summer Without You outshines the second season of the series. While I have grown deeply fond of the secondary character relationships from season two, the personal development and connection between our main characters-particularly Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, are so much stronger in the novel than its adaptation.
Still, the show expands on the emotional arcs with stunning visuals, nuanced performances, and a soundtrack that hits you right in the feels. The books will always offer something the show cannot, even though it tries, and that is Belly’s internal monologue. Her thoughts, doubts, and quiet revelations give readers a deeper understanding of her emotional journey.
Final Thoughts
Grief is a central theme here, and the story reminds us that healing isn’t linear. Belly’s journey mirrors the emotional phases we all go through: denial, anger, sadness, and even acceptance. If you’re navigating loss or emotional upheaval, this book might feel like a gentle companion with an optimistic vision.
This trilogy is a beautifully written exploration of love and loss. It’s perfect for readers who want more than just romance: depth, growth, and a story that lingers. If you loved book one, this sequel will tug at your heartstrings in all the right ways.
