Overview
I long for that wonderful time of the year to completely divulge into all things Hallow-Season. Over My Dead Body was sitting on my bookshelf for a few months, gifted to me by a dear friend along many others, that I have been eager to tick off my TBR list. Being my first graphic novel review, this holds a stark contrast to everything I have reviewed on my blog yet, but I have a wide variety of interests. Let me preface, if you like aesthetically pleasing scenery, witchcraft, and mystery, you’re sure to like this one.
Summary
Taking place at a school for witches, the story immediately begins just as a student, Noreen, goes missing. Intent on taking matters into her own hands, it follows her mentee, Abby, as she enlists the help of Enver, Goldie, and Violet to find her at all costs.
There’s magic, drama, horror, and even a bit of subtle romance. There was a lot to grasp, and the characters felt grounded and real in their magnificent world.
However, I adored the graphics most of all. The visuals were very appealing, and I felt especially fond of the scenes with botany and the woods. The pink and purple undertones that washed over the entirety of the novel added such a serene and magical feel to the entire design, and the character details were striking, phenomenal, and unique.
Final Thoughts
Over My Dead Body was uniquely fascinating. While I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the graphics, I felt there was still much to be desired. The ending seemed to tie together much too neatly to feel believable, and I wish that the plot twists might have fallen in more of a morally grey area, as opposed to crafting a villain that was as plain as black and white.
For that, this made the ending feel rushed and the solution feel undeserved. Though none of that is to say this wasn’t well worth the read! There is a sequel to this novel, and I am hopeful that it not only answers questions but makes up for the first adoption’s lackluster ending.
