The story takes place in a place called Blackwood Academy in purgatory, where students learn magic, reap souls, and compete amongst their classmates. The story unfolds through the perspectives of six students, rivals turned to “unfortunate acquaintances” amidst a grueling competition.
Each character is distinct, with unique identities, motivations, and backstories that intertwine in unexpected ways. Their journeys collide in a narrative filled with twists, betrayals, and heart-wrenching revelations. My heart ached, and I gripped the edges of my book in suspense. It consumed me, and if it weren’t for sleep deprivation, I would have easily read this feat in one sitting.
Final Thoughts
This book is an emotional rollercoaster. There were moments that left my heart pounding, scenes that made me want to scream, and passages that lingered long after I closed the book. The characters are flawed, layered, and deeply human despite the supernatural setting. Their rivalries and alliances feel authentic, and their struggles with morality, survival, and desire make them impossible to forget.

Marie has created a world that begs to be revisited, expanded, and obsessed over.
